When Lightning Strikes a Moving Vehicle

Jul 16, 2015 12:13:00 PM

lightning-strikes-truckLast summer, lightning struck this truck while travelling down Highway 2. It damaged the electrical system, set off 6 airbags, melted and burned portions of the body and filled the cab with smoke.

When the occupants were finally able to bring the vehicle to a stop, they found themselves trapped inside. They were unable to unlock the auto door locks or open the windows. As the smoke inside thickened, things turned dire quickly. Luckily an RCMP officer pulled up and was able to open the truck and bring them to safety unharmed.

With all this damage caused to the vehicle you might wonder if their car insurance will cover repair costs. Well, the good news is that if they have Comprehensive coverage on their car insurance policy, the repair costs will be covered.

Comprehensive is an optional coverage that you can add to your car insurance. It covers damage to your vehicle from "any peril other than collision with another object or by upset". In this case the "other object" was lightning.

Check your policy to see if you already have comprehensive coverage. If you would like to add Comprehensive coverage to your vehicle, just give your friendly neighborhood broker representative a call. We'd be happy to help - 1-855-475-0959
