With the 2026 Alberta riding season on its way, we wanted to take a fresh look at how much motorcycle insurance costs in Alberta. At Armour Insurance, we analyzed hundreds of new policies issued between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2025 to determine the average price riders paid for coverage.

Note: This data reflects average policy pricing across our clients and may not reflect every rider’s experience.

How Much Did a Motorcycle Insurance Policy Cost in Alberta in 2025?

  • Average Annual Cost: $478

  • Average Monthly Cost: $42.22 (assuming 3.5% finance fees)

Most motorcycle insurance policies include:

    • $2 million liability coverage
    • Comprehensive coverage (fire, theft, vandalism, weather)
    • Optional collision coverage

Compared to other provinces, Alberta remains one of the most affordable places in Canada to insure a motorcycle.

Province Typical Annual Motorcycle Insurance Cost
Alberta $478
Ontario $1,500-$4,000
British Columbia $900-$2,000

This price difference is largely due to how motorcycle insurance is structured in Alberta.

Why Motorcycle Insurance is Cheaper in Alberta

Motorcycle insurance in Alberta is rated seasonally. Insurance companies know riders typically ride between May and October, meaning motorcycles are only actively used about half the year. Because of this:

  • Motorcycle policies are already priced assuming winter storage

  • You cannot switch to parking coverage during winter since the seasonal discount is already included

This seasonal rating system is one reason motorcycle insurance in Alberta is significantly cheaper than provinces like Ontario.

Are Motorcycles Dangerous to Ride/Drive?

Motorcycles do carry higher risk than passenger vehicles, mainly because riders have less protection in a collision. However, when we look at Alberta collision data, the full picture is more nuanced.

According to the Alberta Traffic Collision Statistics Report, motorcycles accounted for 30 fatalities and 221 major injuries in 2023 collisions (the last year data was publicly available).

Motorcycles represented 10.2% of vehicles involved in fatal or major injury collisions that year. While motorcycles have a higher risk of serious injury when crashes occur, they are involved in far fewer overall collisions than automobiles. With proper training, protective gear, and responsible riding habits, many riders safely enjoy Alberta’s roads every year.
