Recreational vehicles and watercrafts bring Albertans endless opportunities for fun and adventure, but they also come with responsibilities, like insurance. In 2024, Armour Insurance analyzed data on premiums for motorcycles, boats, RVs, trailers, ATVs, and snowmobiles to provide a clear picture of how much recreational insurance costs in Alberta. By sharing these insights, we aim to help recreational enthusiasts get a baseline for coverage costs.
One key factor affecting the cost of recreational insurance is Alberta’s seasonal climate. Insurance for recreational vehicles is often seasonally rated, meaning the premiums are calculated based on their active use during specific months. This approach acknowledges that you’re not using these vehicles year-round, making the coverage more cost-effective. While you’re still covered for storage-related risks during the off-season, the reduced likelihood of active use keeps premiums affordable, offering a fair and balanced solution for recreational vehicle owners.
Most recreational insurance products have a few different elements of coverage that make up the policy. At very least, all recreational insurance policies with Armour Insurance have $2 million in liability coverage. Comprehensive coverage for fire, theft, vandalism, and natural disaster is also typically added to a recreational insurance policy. Collision coverage is an option for many recreational vehicle products but is less commonly added than it is to standard auto insurance.

The primary reason for the wide margin between the average premium and the most expensive premium is that our data does not create a distinction between trailers and RVs. Since an RV is the primary mode of transportation (while a trailer is being pulled by the primary transportation) the risk for collision, comprehensive, and liability claims are considerably higher with RV's. Understandably, when risk goes up, so does the price.

The wide margin between the average and most expensive premium is generally due to multi-vehicle policies. While $5,000 for ATV insurance is quite expensive, if you have 5-10 ATV's it becomes considerably less per unit.
