Your insurance policy likely has one of more "endorsements" applied to it. Endorsements are like little enhancements to your policy that you can add a la carte. There is one little endorsement that you may already have on your policy called SEF 27. This endorsement should be offered by all insurance companies in Alberta.
This endorsement extends the physical damage coverage to a non-owned automobile, such as a rented or borrowed automobile. Coverage is only available on private passenger type vehicles while in the care, custody or control of the named insured for a period of 30 days or less.
Basically, this means that if you were to rent a vehicle, for personal use, your car insurance will extend to that vehicle and cover it just the same way that it covers your regular vehicle. The main stipulations on this coverage are as follows
There are a couple of ways you can find out if you have this endorsement.
If you do have it, you can feel confident saying no to the rental car insurance. Just remember, that all of the same coverage on your current policy applies, including your deductible, accident free discounts etc.
