Slave Lake Tragedy - Helping Out in Slave Lake

The Economical Insurance Group responds to the Slave Lake disaster - "We're There When You Need Us Most"

The wild fire that incinerated a large part of the town of Slave Lake on May 15th will remain in the memory of Canadians for a long time. It has had a profound impact on the lives of those directly and indirectly affected by this tragedy. The photos below demonstrated the significance of this disaster Having been on site and within the region since the tragedy struck, The Economical Insurance Group is pleased to announce that we have completed major operations and concluded the majority of the reported claims. As a result, we are now in a position to removed our CAT Response Team from the area.

To make certain that our insureds could contact us and take advantage of our local resources, the Economical Catastrophe Command Centre was established in a central area of Athabasca, then moved to Slave Lake as soon as authorities opened the site to insurance companies. Our support areas, within local hotels and arenas, were well marked with banners and signs. In addition, the locations were advertised in local area newspapers.

Below is a brief overview of Economical's CAT responses initiatives, put into action to quickly help our insureds regain their quality of life.

Immediate Response

Economical's Catastrophe Team responded to Athabasca within a day of the loss. Included in the Team were Field Adjusters, Appraisers and support staff equipped to meet with policyholders and immediately address their needs. The Team was also prepared to handle questions from the general public who had been evacuated from Slave Lake. As reports of claims started to come in, the Team worked immediately to settle each claim in person with each policyholder. Our on-location Catastrophe Team settled 100% of our reported automobile claims and personally issued cheques to the insureds.

Visibility

To make certain that our insureds could contact us and take advantage of our local resources, the Economical Catastrophe Command Centre was established in a central area of Athabasca, then moved to Slave Lake as soon as authorities opened the site to insurance companies. Our support areas, within local hotels and arenas, were well marked with banners and signs. In addition, the locations were advertised in local area newspapers.

Communication

Since many insureds were displaced from their home, Economical posted advertisements, providing instructions on claim reporting procedures in the areas where the people were temporarily residing. This was largely accomplished through advertising in the local newspapers, at places where evacuees had gathered, and through the use of social media. An explanatory video was posted on YouTube which included links to the government response site as well as a link to frequently asked questions about the claims process. The link below will take you to the video clip.

Community Involvement

TEIG Staff collected clothing, household items and other goods for donation to victims of the Slave Lake fire. Members of our Catastrophe team also volunteered at the Slave Lake Donation Centre housed in the curling club to assist with distributing goods, unpacking donations and to support those in need. Additionally, with the lack of clean drinking water in Slave Lake, staff hand delivered Economical branded water at volunteer and public areas around Slave Lake.

As the reconstruction in Slave Lake begins, The Economical Insurance Group continues to reach out to our insureds to help them rebuild their homes, business and their lives.
