Parking Lot Etiquette

Jul 23, 2013 9:44:00 AM

parking lot drivingSometimes navigating a parking lot can feel like a free for all. In fact, even though a parking lot accident can affect your car insurance premium just as much as a road accident, it can be very difficult to determine who's at fault. In most parking lot accidents all drivers are considered to be equally at fault.

The Humanacare blog posted these ‘Parking Lot Etiquette’ guidelines to help protect everyone in the parking lot. You may find it decreases your stress as well!

  1. Do not block other vehicles or pedestrians while you are waiting for a parking stall to become available.
  2. Do not allow small children to push the shopping cart while in the parking lot.
  3. Centre your vehicles in the parking stall.
  4. Pull your vehicle all the way into the space.
  5. Never force your vehicles into a space that is too small.
  6. Watch for and be considerate of drivers who are backing out of blind spots.
  7. Keep the parking lot clean by returning your cart and putting any boxes or trash in the appropriate areas.
  8. Park only in designated areas. If you are waiting for someone to come of the store, find an appropriate place to park until you can see them.
  9. Use your turn signal even if you feel is it obvious which direction you are going.
  10. If everyone followed these simple guidelines, we could make parking lots a safer and calmer place.
