If you’re an Edmonton homeowner, you may qualify for a subsidy from the City to install a backwater valve. Review the steps to qualify and put them in place today, just in case you end up with some wet carpets in your basement this spring.

The City of Edmonton Backwater Valve Subsidy Program has a funding available that can assist Homeowners that meet the following criteria:

  • Have a home built prior to 1989
  • Have had a previous basement flooding from sanitary sewer backup
  • Live in an area of previous neighbourhood flooding

The Backwater Valve Subsidy Program allows a reimbursement to qualified residential property owners for the installation of a backwater valve. This valve is normally installed on either the main sewer line where the sanitary sewer exits the house or on various branch line locations to prevent sanitary sewer backup.

Program Eligibility

In order to be eligible for this subsidy, you must meet the following specifications:

  • Your home cannot already have a backwater valve
  • Your address cannot have previously accepted the subsidy
  • You must have a pre-approval consultation by Epcor Flood Prevention

How to Get Pre-Approved

You can book a pre-approval three ways:

Installation

In order to be eligible for the subsidy, you must have the backwater valve installed within 6 months of the inspection. The following types of valves are eligible for the incentive.

  • Adapt-a-valve
  • Branch Line Backwater Valves
  • Fullport Backwater Valves
  • Retrofit Backwater Valves
  • Top Check Fullport Backwater Valves

Submit the Application

Submit the application for the subsidy within 6 months of the inspection. You will need to submit the application with:

  • Proof of inspection
  • An invoice that notes the model of valve installed with the City of Edmonton Business Licence or GST number visible on the invoice
  • Copy of the city of Edmonton Acceptable green sticker with permit number

How much is the Subsidy?

The current subsidy being offered is for $800 that is paid out by cheque made payable to the homeowner. Note, that subsidies are subject to availability and are provided on a first-come, first-serve basis.
