is your dog covered by your insurance?

Did you know that every 60 seconds someone in Canada gets bitten by a dog? That’s over 525,000 people being bitten each year! If you’re a dog owner, it’s important for you to talk to your insurance provider to know if you are covered for your dog. Your dog is your responsibility. You are legally liable for any injuries or damages caused by your furry friend.

Your Dog, Your Responsibility

Legislature in Alberta states that a dog owner is responsible for any injuries that their dog causes to other people or animals. This means that victims can seek compensation for damages, medical costs, and loss of income due to injuries. Are you covered?

Protect Yourself as a Dog Owner

Even if you think your cute Spot would never hurt a fly, it only takes a second for something to happen. It’s important to be insured no matter how cute and cuddly your four legged friend might be.

Dogs are usually covered under your home or tenant insurance policy. Make sure your insurance provider is aware that you have a dog. Then they can help you cover your financial obligations if a liability suit is brought against you. Call and find out what your coverage includes.

Doing the following can reduce the risk of your dog causing injuring:

1). Keep your dog on a leash.

2). Muzzle your dog in public.

3). Keep your dog away from strangers.

4). Never leave your dog alone with children, babies, or non-family members.

5). Avoid activities that increase your dog’s aggressive tendencies or over excite your dog. Do not involve your dog in situations where they might become uncomfortable or anxious.

6). Get your dog spayed or neutered.
