Keep your House Dry this Spring

Apr 2, 2012 2:39:00 PM

We all have our fingers crossed for a Sunny Spring Just in case here are some tips to be prepared for Spring Showers

Water Damage in Home

Indeed spring is early for parts of Canada this year. Here in Edmonton we've seen some a lot of water, ice and more water already this season. As the spring showers pour, Canadians are at risk for more damage than rained-out picnics – we’re also at risk for water damage to our property.

Water damage to your home, and belongings can be expensive and frustrating, harming not only the home, but also possessions and the wellbeing of the people inside.

For most Insurance Companies water is the leading cause of property damage, accounting for over 40% of property claims each year.

“This time of year results in an increased number water-related claims,” states Wayne Ross, insurance expert at Aviva Canada. “And as homeowners are investing much more in their basements these days, it is important to take proactive steps to minimize the risk.”

Here are some tips to keep your property dry this spring:

  • Inspect your roof, check the condition of the shingles and be sure to clear out gutters to prevent blockages
  • Install a backwater valve to prevent sewer backs-up
  • Inspect and test your sump pump (if you have one)
  • Check your foundationand if water is pooling, find a way to lead the liquid away from the home

Review your Home Insurance policy and make sure you have Sewer Backup coverage.  Even if you do cover your bases and prepair your home for the wet season, sometimes keeping the water out is unavoidable. If you find yourself in a wet situation and think you may have to make a property insurance claim, Armour is always there for you.
