How to Keep Your RV Germ-Free this Summer

Germs are a part of life, especially when you're camping. But most of us are used to regular sanitizing, and let's face it, RVs can get pretty filthy over the summer. With Canadian summers feeling way too short, the last thing any of us want is to get sick. Mobile RVing lists the 10 surprising ways your RV could be making you sick.

The best way to avoid this is to keep your RV clean and sanitized. Here are our tips for keeping your RV germ-free this summer!

  • Do a thorough clean to kick off RV season

After sitting over the winter, dust and other bacteria can start to accumulate in the RV... especially once temperatures start rising. When doing your spring cleaning, add your RV to the list. Remember, there’s a difference between cleaning and disinfecting. Cleaning removes dirt, germs, and impurities with soap and water, but this doesn’t kill all germs – it removes them and helps lower their numbers. Regularly clean surfaces using soap and water. Pay attention to everyday touched surfaces like tables, countertops, handles, and faucets.

  • Clean, then disinfect

After cleaning, use a disinfectant to kill remaining germs: a suggested surface disinfectant, a diluted bleach solution, or an alcohol solution with at least 70% alcohol. In most cases, you should leave the disinfecting solution on surfaces for a certain amount of time, so read product labels carefully. Glamper Life lists the 10 must-have basic RV cleaning supplies.

  • The kitchen is a hot spot for bacteria

During your clean, extra time will be needed for the kitchen. Take everything out of your fridge, freezer, and cabinets. Check your expiration dates and dispose of anything past its prime. Disinfect the inside of your fridge and freezer. If you’ve had any spills, you might want to wash the fridge's shelves or drawers in your dishwasher or sink. Spray and wipe the inside of your cabinets and clean up crumbs that may attract pests.

  • Don't forget your electronics

Our phones, tablets, and remotes are often forgotten when it comes to cleaning, but these high touch items can be covered in bacteria. Disinfect these using alcohol-based wipes or sprays. HGTV lists the best products for cleaning electronics.

  • OR your soft surfaces

You'll want to make sure to clean your soft surfaces like upholstery, drapes, and carpets, and bedding. When possible, wash items using extremely hot water. If you can, run everything through your washing machine.

  • Clean out your air vents and filters

Heating vents accumulate both dust and debris over time, especially on the floor. Remove the covers to vacuum and clean the air vents. Dust also tends to accumulate in air filters, which can slow down the circulation of fresh air in your RV. Most air filters can be taken outside and hosed down. The Camping Advisor describes how to clean or replace your RV's AC filter.

  • Fill and drain your freshwater tank

Giving your freshwater tank a good flushing makes a big difference for your water, especially if your RV only gets used during the peak season. First, open the valve to empty your tank. Run a clean hose to add water into the tank. This will help push through any minerals from hard water or debris in your tank. Use a special freshwater tank sanitizer. Nada Guides describes how to clean your RV freshwater tank.

  • What else am I missing?
  1. Window screens
  2. The floor
  3. The RV's exterior
  4. The bathroom
  5. Also, check out Armour's RV, trailer, and camper insurance page and make sure you're getting the best coverage! Okay... this one doesn't keep your RV germ-free, but it's also essential for making the most of the summer in your RV!
