Sep 28, 2021 1:20:11 PM

Water-Related Claims are on the Rise

As your home insurance broker, helping you protect your home is our top priority. Water-related damages have become the number one threat to homeowners in Canada. The continued rise of water-related claims makes it important that we ensure our clients have the coverage they need to protect themselves against water damage. That's why we advise our clients to consider Intact Insurance's Enhanced Water Damage Package.

THE ENHANCED WATER DAMAGE PACKAGE

The Enhanced Water Damage Package protects customers with an added level of protection and choice against water-related claims. Rates and eligibility will vary by territory.

SEWER BACK-UP: Coverage in the event water accidentally backs up from the sewer system
and flows into your home. This coverage also includes $1,000 towards the installation of a sewer back-up loss prevention device after a covered loss.

WATER & SEWER LINES: Coverage to repair or replace your water service line and/or
sewer line due to a loss resulting from a leak, break, tear, rupture or collapse of the line.

OVERLAND WATER: Coverage for water damage caused by lake/river, overflow,
heavy rain or rapid snow melt that enters your home from a point at or above ground
surface.

GROUND WATER: Optional coverage available for purchase against damage
caused by water entering your home suddenly and accidentally, through a basement
wall, foundation, or floor.

Reduce Your Risk of Basement Flooding

Intact has also released a seasonal checklist to reduce the risk of basement flooding. With these simple actions, you can significantly reduce the risk of flooding and better protect your home against the growing threat of water damage, especially prior to spring. Melting snow is among the largest causes of flooding in Canada, as well as torrential rain. Make sure to go through this list with your household before peak flooding season.

Basment Flood Protection Check List

In addition, take a look at Intact's 3 major steps for basement flood prevention. For items found under Step 3, make sure to ask your municipality about any permit requirements for these upgrades, as well as the availability of flood protection subsidies.

Basement Flood Protection

If a Flood occurs...

  • To reduce the risk of fire or being electrocuted, turn off the gas and the electricity in your house. If it's too late for you to do so, let your electricity or natural gas supplier turn everything off.
  • When the water level rises and threatens to reach your home, install wooden boards and build sandbag dikes.
  • Comply with the authorities if they ask you to leave your home, because it means the danger is real.
  • Before you leave, find out what condition the roads are in.
