What Should I Do With My Old Batteries

We posted a video on our facebook page recently that probably came as quite a shock to home owners everywhere. In April of 2011 this family's house started ablaze and you won't believe how the fire started.

This fire was caused by two used 9V batteries waiting to be sent to recycle. The terminals touched and the batteries heated to the point that their surroundings caught fire and soon the entire house was engulfed in flames.

So how should you dispose of your old batteries without risking fire?

We all know that our old batteries should be recycled at designated recycling centres. Throwing them in the trash causes a heavy burdon on our already taxed eco system. But until you get a chance to go the local recycling centre here's what to do.

  • Keep a roll of electrical tape in the bin that you store your used batteries.
  • Put a piece of tape snugly over each terminal on batteries when you store them.
  • This should keep them from touching other terminals in the box and keep them from shorting out and causing a fire.

Where do You Take Your Old Batteries to be Recycled?

Every province and municipality has different palces that you can recycle your batteries. In Alberta, you can use the list below to find a batery recycler close to you.

Here's where you can properly dispose of your old batteries in Alberta:
