Uber Ride Sharing Insurance Now Available

Jun 30, 2016 4:40:17 PM

uberinsurancejourney.jpgWith the blessing of Alberta's Superintendant of Insurance, Uber is back and its drivers will be properly insured. Uber announced their July 1 return to Edmonton today as new rules will allow for Intact's proposed new Ride Sharing Insurance coverage to become a reality under  Alberta's SPF 9 insurance code.

This coverage will activate to provide insurance coverage for the drivers and their passenger's from the moment they accept a ride and will continue coverage until the passenger exits the vehicle. The Intact/Uber Ridesharing policy coverage will include the following features:

  • $2 Million Third Party Liability
  • Standard Accident Benefits
  • $1,000 deductable for Comprehensive and Collision

How Do Drivers Get Ridesharing Insurance?

A bulletin released by Intact Insurance states that "Uber Transportation Network drivers and passengers as well as third parties in Alberta will be covered under Uber’s SPF 9 Transporation Network policy from the moment a ride is accepted to the moment passengers exit the vehicle. This coverage applies to all Uber drivers and passengers (regardless of their personal automobile insurer)."

This insurance is automatically enstated by Uber through their partnership with Intact, so as a rider you can be sure that your driver has this coverage.

To ensure that you're properly covered while using your vehicle for personal use OR while available to accept a trip, drivers must contact their insurance provider and inform that they are using their vehicle for the Uber ridesharing service.

For more information please contact your insurance provider.
